Dream Vacation in England: Ancient Sites—Stonehenge

The great stone circle of Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the prehistoric world. This marvel of engineering and astronomy was built by our ancestors using only bronze tools. Not only did they transport some of the huge stones 135 miles, they placed them so that the first rays of the sun rise over the same stone every year on the summer solstice and shine directly into the center of the monument.

Free audio guides are available for a very satisfying self-guided tour. Visitors are kept to a path around the monument, but you can see a couple of the outlying stones up close.
